News Release
May 28, 2025
The Nebraska Center for the Education of Children who are Blind or Visually Impaired (NCECBVI) received a brand-new transportation vehicle, provided by the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) through an ESSERs funded grant award. This new bus will enhance safe, accessible transportation for students served through NCECBVI’s residential and day programs.
Founded in 1875, NCECBVI serves children from infancy to age 21 across the state of Nebraska. The center offers a continuum of services—including residential, day, and outreach programs—designed to meet the unique educational needs of students who are blind or visually impaired. The new bus will support NCECBVI’s mission by enabling students to safely participate in community learning experiences, field trips, and essential transportation needs.
“We are incredibly grateful to the Nebraska Department of Education for recognizing the importance of safe and accessible transportation for our students,” said Dr. Tanya Armstrong, Superintendent of NCECBVI. “This new bus is more than a vehicle—it’s a vital tool in helping our students engage fully in their education and the world around them.”
The transportation vehicle is specially equipped to accommodate students with a range of visual and physical needs, ensuring equity and safety in travel to and from educational activities.
As part of its outreach model, NCECBVI also partners with school districts, families, and educational staff across the state to provide specialized instruction, consultation, and professional development. This new bus will help support these statewide efforts by making student-centered travel more efficient and effective.
This investment reflects NDE’s continued commitment to ensuring all Nebraska students—regardless of disability—have the support and resources needed to thrive. For more information about NCECBVI and its services, please visit: https://www.ncecbvi.org/.
