Temperatures in April were overall not too far from normal. Eastern Norton Sound was just a little bit milder than average, while west of Golovin temperatures averaged just a little bit below normal.
At Nome, the average temperature of 22 degrees was within a half degree of the 1991 to 2020 normal. During the month, 18 days were warmer than normal, but the unseasonably cold weather from April 6 to 11 kept the monthly average down. Highest temperature in April in Nome was 44 on the 23rd, low of -16 on the 10th.
Unlike last year, April precipitation was near to below normal across the region. Nome Airport's total precipitation for the month of 0.43" was the lowest April total since 2019. Snowpack melt was well underway by late in the month, and some low elevations in eastern Norton Sound only had patchy snow remaining by the 30th. Of course, in the Bering Strait and on St Lawrence Island, snowmelt always comes later.
