Stacey Dash — best known for playing Dionne Davenport in the teen classic Clueless — has announced she’s running for congress.

The former Fox News contributor filed documents to run in California’s 44th district on Monday (27 February). Dash will be the first republican to run for office in the area since 2010, the area has been a Democrat stronghold for many years, voting overwhelmingly for Hilary Clinton last election.

Conversely, Dash endorsed Trump as President, once saying: "I believe he is a true conservative."

Earlier this month, the actor hinted at running for a political station, writing on Twitter: “A number of people online and off have suggested I run for political office. I wanted to see what my online community thinks of this idea as I mull the possibilities. Thoughts?”

Clueless, which reached cinemas in 1995, remains Dash’s best known work, the actor having reprised the role for the television show of the same name.

Following a string of low-budget movies, relatively unsuccessful shows, and music videos, Dash was hired by Fox News as a contributor in 2014. The station failed to renew her contract last year.

Dash has previously had a governing role: she played the mayor of Chicago in Sharknado: The 4th Awakens, a role she was given following the social media reaction to an appearance at the Oscars.
