Lithuanian carriers ready for Russian road fee rise

BC, Vilnius, 22.04.2016.Print version
Increase of the road fee for Lithuanian and foreign trucks crossing Russia will lead to higher costs of Lithuanian carriers, however, relevant preparations have been made for the change, says president of the association of road carriers Linava, cites LETA/BNS.

"For Latvia and Lithuania, the fee was introduced last fall. The fee is introduced in two phases, and the second phase has come now – the fee is now higher. This is what we have been notified about (by the Russian government)," Linava president Erlandas Mikenas told BNS Lithuania.

In his words, the date of application of the higher fee is yet to be announced.

On April 19, Russia's Prime Minister Dmitriy Medvedev signed a document on increase of road fees for foreign vehicles – the application of the fee is expanded to include carriers from Lithuania and Latvia, Russia's Interfax news agency said.

On Nov. 15 of 2015, Russia introduced a road fee for Lithuanian carriers, although bilateral agreements had earlier exempted carriers of both countries from such fees. In response, Lithuania launched a road fee for Russian carriers last December.
